The Paul Winter Consort, with beloved vocalist Theresa Thomason, brings the timeless music of their legendary New York solstice events, in a joyous and profound celebration of the season of renewal and the greater family of life on Earth.
For the past 44 years, Paul Winter and his Consort have been artists-in-residence at the world’s largest cathedral, New York’s St John the Divine, where they have presented over 200 unique events, including annual Winter and Summer Solstice Celebrations. The Winter Solstice Celebration grew to become New York’s favorite holiday alternative to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the Nutcracker.
In contrast to their large-scale productions at the Cathedral, this performance will be more intimate. Winter notes, “While we will not have the dancers and theatrical effects that were possible in the world’s largest Cathedral, we will have the essence of our Solstice music, and we will feature, as always, the beloved voice of Theresa Thomason, who has been the ‘star’ of our Solstice Celebrations for over 25 years.”
Central to all the traditions of Solstice is the renewal of spirit, symbolized by the rebirth of the sun. Winter Solstice is a time for healing and for hope. It is a time to celebrate community and relatedness, and to honor the diversity and the unity of this great cornucopia of life on Earth. Says Winter, “In remembering the Solstice, we resonate once again with the rhythm of the cosmos and allow our hearts to embrace the optimism of our ancient knowledge that the light will overcome the darkness.”
The Consort includes Paul Winter on soprano sax, cellist Eugene Friesen, Brazilian pianist Henrique Eisenmann, Bulgarian bassist Peter Slavov, percussionist Bertram Lehmann, and the voice of Theresa Thomason.
