TIM BURTON'S "ED WOOD" 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION - "ED WOOD (1994)" Screening / Special Sneak Peak - TIM BURTON DOCUSERIES (2024)

SHIFF salutes legendary visionary Tim Burton with this special sneak preview of the first two episodes of filmmaker Tara Wood’s sprawling 4-Part docuseries on the director’s phantasmagorical life and career. This comprehensive deep dive traces Burton’s childhood thru his early years at Cal Arts and Disney, leading to his meteoric rise with PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE, BEETLEJUICE, BATMAN and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. Each episode showcases new interviews with Burton’s most intimate collaborators, including Johnny Depp, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Walken, Danny Elfman, Jenna Ortega and more.

Directly following the docuseries sneak peak is SHIFF & D23’s 30th anniversary showing of Burton’s 1994 masterpiece, ED WOOD. Winner of two Oscars for actor Martin Landau's portrayal of Bela Lugosi and for make-up artist Rick Baker, Johnny Depp stars in this tender and hilarious portrayal of Hollywood’s worst auteur as he helms the hilariously inept productions of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, GLEN OR GLENDA and BRIDE OF THE MONSTER. Deftly told by pop culture screenwriters Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski with comedic support from Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Bill Murray, Jeffrey Jones and Lisa Marie as Vampira, this timeless classic is Burton’s platinum standard from his 40+ years of filmmaking.
